Methylation profiling has been conducted on DNA samples from approximately 3650, consisting of 1425 individuals from the British Household Panel Survey component of Understanding Society and another 2230 from the General Population Sample. A genome wide scan has been conducted on DNA samples from approximately 10,000 people, which enables us to examine gene-environment interactions for health and social phenomena. Biomarkers, genetics and epigeneticsĪ range of bio-medical measures have been collected from around 20,000 adults, which included blood pressure, weight, height, waist measurement, body fat, grip strength and lung function. Understanding Society data is currently used for public health purposes by the Department for Health, Public Health England, the Scottish Government and the Welsh Government. Data from the Study can be used to identify strategies for improving population health and reducing health inequalities. The rich social and economic data in Understanding Socity also allows researchers to investigate the social determinants of health - the effects of social and economic experiences on health and wellbeing and the impact of people's health on their ability to engage in their social and economic lives. The health data that Understanding Society collects over time enables researchers to explore how public health policies affect health and wellbeing.The Study covers all four countries of the UK, allowing comparisons of health and wellbeing in the different policy contexts in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Using Understanding Society for public health research The Study also uses the CAGE scale for alcohol consumption, the IPAQ scale for exercise and the SDQ strengths and difficulties questionnaire for children's mental health. Understanding Society uses questions from the GHQ-12 general health questionnaire which is used to assess mental health, WEMWBS, a measure of wellbeing, and the SF-12, a short form health survey used to measure quality of life, physical and mental health.
